Grid-tied vs hybrid: which home system is right for you?

A grid-tied system is the lowest-cost way to cut your CFE bill, but it shuts off during a blackout for safety. A hybrid system adds batteries so you keep power when CFE goes down, at a higher upfront cost. In Baja California Sur, where outages are common — especially in summer — many homeowners choose hybrid for the resilience.

Grid-tied: lowest cost, best payback, no backup

A grid-tied system sends excess production to the grid for net-metering credit and draws from the grid at night. It's the cheapest setup and usually the fastest payback because there are no batteries to buy. The trade-off: during a CFE outage it shuts down automatically (a safety requirement), so it does nothing for blackouts. If your grid is stable and your goal is purely lowering the bill, grid-tied is often the right call.

Hybrid: savings plus blackout protection

A hybrid system does everything grid-tied does and adds batteries, so when CFE fails your essential loads — fridge, Wi-Fi, lights, fans, key-room AC — keep running. You pay more upfront for the batteries, and payback is longer, but you're buying resilience as well as savings. In areas with frequent or long outages, that resilience is the deciding factor.
